Most Failures Are Preventable
After years of preparing students for the Alberta Class 5 road test in Edmonton, I have seen the same mistakes come up again and again. These are predictable, and with the right preparation, completely avoidable.
Mistake 1: Incomplete Stops at Stop Signs
A rolling stop — even slowing to 2 km/h without fully stopping — is an immediate critical error. The examiner needs to see your vehicle reach a complete, momentary stop with zero movement before you check the intersection and proceed.
Mistake 2: Not Doing Shoulder Checks
Mirrors do not cover your blind spots. Before every lane change, merge, or turn, you must physically turn your head to check the blind spot. Examiners are watching specifically for this. Make it obvious.
Mistake 3: Speeding or Driving Too Slowly
Both extremes cost points. On Edmonton's residential streets, staying at or near the posted 50 km/h limit shows confidence. On school zones (30 km/h) or playground zones, you must slow down.
Mistake 4: Incorrect Lane Positioning on Turns
On left turns, you must end up in the closest lane to the centre. On right turns, end up in the rightmost lane. Starting or ending in the wrong lane is a demerit.
Mistake 5: Forgetting to Signal
Signals must be activated at least 30 metres before a turn in Edmonton. Build signalling into your checklist: check mirror, signal, shoulder check, move.
Mistake 6: Poor Intersection Management
Rushing through yellow lights, failing to yield to pedestrians, or not treating an uncontrolled intersection correctly are all common failures. At any intersection where you are unsure of the right-of-way, default to caution and yield.
Mistake 7: Nerves Causing Hesitation
Hesitating when you have the right of way — sitting at a green light too long, not merging when gaps are available — loses points for indecision. The best cure for test-day nerves is thorough preparation.
