What Is the Alberta GDL Program?
Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program is a two-stage system designed to give new drivers in Edmonton and across the province a structured path to earning full driving privileges. It applies to everyone getting their first Alberta driver's licence, regardless of age.
Stage 1: Class 7 Learner's Licence
To get your Class 7, you must pass a knowledge test at an Alberta Registry office. The test covers Alberta Traffic Safety Act rules, road signs, and safe driving practices. You must be at least 14 years old.
Class 7 restrictions include:
- Must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver (Class 5) who is 18+ and seated in the front passenger seat
- Zero blood alcohol tolerance — absolutely no alcohol
- No driving between midnight and 5:00 AM
- Must hold Class 7 for a minimum of 1 year before advancing

- Must hold Class 5 GDL for 2 years before applying for a full Class 5
Stage 3: Full Class 5 Licence
After completing the GDL probationary period with no suspensions and passing the required time, you can apply to remove the GDL condition from your licence. You are now a fully licenced driver in Alberta.
