Why Parallel Parking Trips Up So Many Students

Parallel parking causes more road test failures in Edmonton than almost any other manoeuvre. The combination of reversing, steering, judging space, and checking mirrors all at once overwhelms students who have not drilled it into a consistent routine. The good news: once you have a reliable system, it becomes nearly automatic.

What the Alberta Road Test Expects

On your Edmonton Class 5 road test, you need to:

  • Position the car safely before beginning
  • Complete the manoeuvre without hitting the curb or cones
  • End up within 30 cm of the curb
  • Check mirrors and blind spots throughout

The Step-by-Step Method We Teach at Lucky Driving School

Step 1: Pull Up Alongside the Car in Front

Position your car parallel to the parked car ahead of your target space, about 60 to 90 cm away from it. Align your rear bumper with their rear bumper. Signal right.

Step 2: Reverse Straight Back

Shift into reverse. Check all mirrors and look over your right shoulder. Reverse slowly in a straight line until your rear axle lines up with the rear bumper of the car beside you.

Step 3: Turn the Wheel Hard Right

While continuing to reverse slowly, turn your steering wheel as far right as it goes. Watch your right mirror to judge distance from the curb. Reverse until your car is at roughly a 45-degree angle.

Step 4: Straighten and Turn Hard Left

When your front is clear of the car ahead, turn the wheel hard left while continuing to reverse. This swings your front end into the space.

Step 5: Straighten Up

As you approach the curb (aim for 15 to 25 cm), straighten your wheels. Pull forward slightly to centre yourself in the space if needed.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

  • Hitting the curb: You are turning too late in step 3. Wait a little longer before going full right lock.
  • Ending too far from the curb: You are not turning the wheel far enough, or you are moving too fast.
  • Front hitting the car ahead: You are starting step 4 too late. Watch your front right corner in the mirror.
